A Brand Spankin' New Chapter in the I-Hate-Thetard/AP-Lit Book o' Awesome!!! Enjoy!
Our assignment for this weekend is to write a paper on Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston the author of the Harlem renaissance (not to be confused with Zora Neale Hurston the occassionally appearing character on Lost). Now this is all well and good, except that the topics we get to choose from are so ridiculously ambiguous that it's damn-near impossible to know if you're at all going down the right route. So after spending a good half-hour on deciding which to write on, I chose the following.

Choose a complex and important character that, by studying his actions alone, could be considered evil. Then, in a well-written essay, discuss how their personality in the book causes the reader to no longer consider him evil.

Now, the issue is that Hurston doesn't really write evil characters, or, at least, characters that seem evil but really aren't. Tea Cake, for example, is an abusive lover, but Hurston stated that that was for historical purposes only. It had nothing to do with creating a debate about whether or not he was "evil". Then there's Jodie who's just a pain in the ass. I don't know about anybody else, but I didn't like Jodie at all. The moment we met him I thought he was a slimy, smarmy bastard. I'm sorry; I did. So I can't very well write about him. And Logan was completely underdeveloped. So what does that leave me with?? I suppose I could try to focus on that one chick who wants to be white, but she's not exactly important...

Please keep in mind that I was a dumb bunny yesterday and left my bookbag in Lauren's car. Thus, I don't even have a copy of this book. Gee, Kiri. That was a really bad idea.

Anyway, I'm at a loss for what to write about and I definitely don't want to leave it for tomorrow. So I've got Monkey Notes open and I'm grasping for what little I remember of the book. Damn it all. Stop being so poor at planning, Kiri Palm!

Oh, and, I've cleverly distracted myself from this assignment by a matinee showing of Sin City. That was clever of me too. ^ ^
