Despite the fact that I should be devouring The World According to Garp (and don't yell at me, because I really do know), I went to Milner yesterday to snag a copy of The Last Testament of Oscar Wilde. I'm not one to delight in journals, but this is excellent! It really offers a unique perspective on Wilde, even if you are like me and don't understand half of the allusions. Here, I'll give an example:

Gide once told me that he kept a journal: what little there is in it must, I imagine, be of a sensational nature. I will attempt something in a more educational vein: I have already designed the frontispiece.

THE MODERN WOMAN'S GUIDE TO OSCAR WILDE
A Romance

"I owe everything to it." Mr Bernard Shaw
"I always consult this book when I travel." Mrs Patrick Campbell

Only one copy will be printed, on Japenese vellum, and exhibited in the Natural History Museum.

It's stuff like that but then it also gets philosophical and poignant and disconcerting too. I don't know how to describe it, but it's really good. And I hope I finish it quickly so Merry doesn't kill me.
